Jurij Šubic is recognized as the first Slovenian painter significantly influenced by French art. During his time in Normandy and Paris, he immersed himself in plein air painting and explored the nuances of natural light in his work. Some of his most renowned paintings include “Before the Hunt,” “Portrait of Ivan Tavčar,” and “Visits…”

Painting Before the hunt

Tip!

Before the hunt - the picture shows a hunter inspecting a rifle in front of a sunlit door. The painting shows the painter's precise observation of colour glare, the play of sun and shadow, the trembling of the atmosphere in colour tones, etc. Šubic was the first Slovenian to exhibit his painting in the Paris Salon in 1883 and achieved a nice recognition.
